We want to celebrate the life of one of our dearest friends, Rodney Sumpter, who passed away last week. Rodney lived an incredible life and made a lasting impact on his community and colleagues.

Since he began volunteering with NLS in 2011, Rodney assisted more than 400 pro bono clients throughout the years. Last year, he was honored with the Legacy Award at our Champions of Justice event .

We will remember Rodney not only for his dedicated service to NLS, but also for his kindness, humility, and compassion. His legacy will live on through every individual he helped and inspired.

In honor of AANHPI Heritage Month, KTNV Channel 13 Las Vegas's Anjali Patel KTNV sat down with our Executive Director, Alex Cherup, to explore the deeply personal history that drives his commitment to equal access to justice.

Alex grew up hearing his grandmother's stories of being forcibly removed from her home and incarcerated at Manzanar — one of ten camps where more than 100,000 Japanese Americans were held during World War II. She was a recent high school graduate when it happened; her diploma had to be mailed to the camp.

Those stories never left him. "It's a guiding force for my work every day," Alex says.

The injustice his grandmother and grandfather faced — stripped of liberty and property, with no legal recourse — is exactly why the mission of Nevada Legal Services matters so much: everyone deserves access to justice.

We are grateful for Alex's leadership and the legacy of resilience that brought him to this work. ⚖

Last week, we celebrated Law Day with two community Ask-A-Lawyer events:

🌵 In Las Vegas, the southern Nevada legal community came together to provide free consultations, legal information, and intake at the Parkdale Recreation Center.

🏔️ In Reno, we teamed up with Northern Nevada Legal Aid to offer consultations and information on a wide range of civil legal matters at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center.

We had a wonderful time at the 11th Annual Nye County Social Services Fair in Pahrump earlier this week! Our attorneys enjoyed connecting with community members and sharing information about free civil legal services available to Nevada residents.

This Black History Month, Nevada Legal Services was honored to stand alongside community leaders dedicated to uplifting and strengthening Southern Nevada.

We extend our congratulations to Councilwoman Shondra Summers-Armstrong on a successful and impactful "Love on Jackson" Block Party on February 21, 2026. This event brought together residents, organizations, and families in Historic West Las Vegas to celebrate unity, culture, and community resilience -- Values that closely align with our mission to expand access to justice.

We were also proud to participate in the celebration of Dr. Al Gourrier on February 22, 2026 to acknowledge his lifetime of contributions in education and to the Las Vegas community. Recognizing Dr. Gourrier honors his advocacy for a Nevada where opportunity, dignity, and justice are accessible to all.
