I was reminded the other day of why consistency, professionalism, and putting in hard work behind-the-scenes matter so much.

A potential client called to inquire about my services. There was no need for a lengthy introduction, no need to outline my qualifications, and no need to convince them to choose me instead of another Notary.

They simply asked, “Are you available?”

My answer? Yes! And based on the information they shared, I provided a quote and we set the appointment.

That simple conversation was a reminder that your reputation can speak for you before you ever have the opportunity to speak for yourself.

Every interaction is an opportunity to build and reinforce your reputation, whether that’s in business, in your community, or in just plain, old everyday life. The way you show up, treat others, and follow through on your word leaves a lasting impression.

What Every Nevada Consumer Should Know About Notary Fees

If you know me at all, you know I love what I do and I love helping others. I hesitated to write this article, but something has really been on my mind.

Over the past few weeks, several people have contacted me after being quoted – or even charged – $125.00 for a single document requiring one notarized signature, including two situations involving hospital and rehabilitation facility visits.

I understand that when a loved one is hospitalized, in a rehab facility, or simply a senior living independently or in an assisted living arrangement, families are often under tremendous stress and simply need help. Unfortunately, that’s also when many people don’t realize what Nevada law actually allows a Notary Public to charge.

Under Nevada Revised Statutes (NRS) 240.100, the maximum fee for one acknowledgment or jurat is $15.00. A mobile Notary can also charge a separate travel fee, but it must be explained in advance and agreed to by the client. The travel fee cannot exceed $15.00 per hour during daytime hours, with a 2-hour minimum – so that is $30.00 for most daytime appointments.

That means a typical daytime mobile notarization involving one document and one notarized signature would generally total just $45.00 ($15.00 notarial fee plus $30.00 minimum travel fee), assuming no other lawful, separately disclosed charges apply. A quote of $125.00 is nearly three times that amount.

For comparison, Nevada law allows for Remote On-Line Notarization (RON), and a RON-approved Notary (which I am) can charge $25.00 per notarial act (NRS 240.197). There is no travel fee associated with a RON appointment.

My purpose here isn’t to criticize anyone. It’s to encourage consumers to know their rights and to ask questions before agreeing to a fee. A reputable Nevada Notary Public should always be able and willing to explain the Notary fee, the separate travel fee, and any other charges, if applicable.

Note: There are situations where the total cost of an appointment may legitimately exceed the statutory Notary fee. Some common examples would be loan signings and estate planning appointments – in other words, appointments that may include coordinating a multi-document comprehensive signing, providing witnesses, scan-backs, shipping, and other agreed-upon administrative services. Those services are separate from the notarial act itself and should always be clearly explained and agreed to before booking the appointment. Transparency benefits everyone.

Knowledge is empowering, especially during life’s most difficult moments.

If you ever have questions about Nevada Notary fees or the notarization process, I am always happy to help, whether you choose to utilize my services or not.
