We have a great addition to our legal team this summer, and she is a quick study and has done wonderful works.
Q1 - Who is Brianna, the Summer Intern 25’ at Chang Law Group?
I’m Brianna. I am currently a senior at The Ohio State University, pursuing a Bachelor of Arts with majors in Criminology and Criminal Justice, and minors in Communication and International Business.
Academically, I have always maintained a strong GPA and consistently been on the Dean’s List. My interests in law has grown while pursuing my majors.
I also tried to apply what I have learned in real life. In the Summer 2023 after my freshman year, I interned at a major litigation law firm in Taiwan. During that time, I assisted in reviewing legal documents, observed court hearing proceedings, and participated in client meetings conducted by the attorneys. My experiences inspire me to attend law school and pursue a career in the legal field.
During my extra-curriculum time, I’ve joined organizations to build connections with peers and professionals interested in law, attended workshops and classes to develop skills like critical thinking, precise and efficient communications, and team leadership and collaboration.
Q2 - Why are you interested in the internship?
I am deeply interested in this internship that aligns with my long-term goals of law career. I have wanted to gain more real-world experiences and the opportunities to communicate with the clients directly.
For this internship, I set forth the goals to take part in meaningful works, including the basic but essential skills to be the initial focal point in answering clients’ communication, reviewing legal documents to find key relevant information, and summarize and report case information to attorneys.
Q3 - What skills or experiences do you hope to gain from this internship?
My major goals before starting the internship was to better understand how a law firm operates and how legal services are delivered to clients. I wanted to develop both legal knowledge and soft skills through this internship.
Q4 - What are the new things that you have learned so far?
One of the very first tasks that I have been assigned to do is to handle client’s intake calls professionally and with confidence. I have to articulate and be methodical on the ways to extract information by asking the right questions, confirm with clients on the issues, rephrase and summarize the issues clearly and succinctly for the attorneys.
I have also gained more knowledge on standard legal documents such as limited liability company government forms, checklist pertaining to franchise operation, record sealing materials, and basic probate administration matters.
Alongside these experiences, my current internship here at the Chang Law Group further helped me become more detail-oriented and responsive while taking advantage of my bilingual ability in English and Mandarin to current role.
All these taught me how to analyze complex information efficiently. Going forward from this, I hope to continue sharpening my legal writing and organization skills and involve in more legal research, follow-ups, and observe attorneys making long-term legal advice and decision for clients.
In summary, during this internship, I have already learned so much that goes beyond the classroom. Many materials I have worked through so far are valuable, I am starting to build up my skills of clarity and precision when communicating with attorneys and clients. This internship has made me more aware of the importance of detail, confidentiality, and communication skills, and most importantly, it has deepened my interests in law.
