Obama awarding Isabel Allende the Presidential Medal of "Freedom," has to be one of the all-time greatest examples of unabashed hypocrisy in world history. At the time of the award, in 2014, Obama's vice president, Joe Biden, had been a member of the senate when the U.S. overthrew her father's first cousin, the legitimately elected Salvadore Allende, in Chile and replaced him with the brutal dictator, Augusto Pinochet, who immediately began rounding up thousands and torturing and killing them. Of course, Isabel was on Pinochet's list of those who were targeted to be tortured and killed and therefore, she was forced to flee to Venezuela, where she wrote "The House of the Spirits," which a number of then useful-idiot, self-proclaimed religious individuals sought to ban it from public schools, ostensibly because of its "pornographic" and "immoral" depictions of s*x. Of course, the immorality of forcing her to flee her country as a result of having overthrown a legitimately elected leader, to whom she was related, and installing a brutal dictator who placed her on the list of those to be tortured and killed is never mentioned. That's the type of "magical realism" our government is still uncomfortable about discussing to this day.
