Arrested today. Jury trial tomorrow? Not in the real world.

Hollywood makes the criminal justice system look fast. Someone gets arrested, hires a lawyer, and suddenly they're standing in front of a jury. But that's not how criminal cases typically work in Nevada.

While Nevada law provides speedy-trial protections, criminal cases can take months to reach trial. And here's something many people don't realize: A faster trial isn't always better for the defense.

Depending on the circumstances, additional time may allow an attorney to investigate the allegations, review evidence, and prepare a stronger defense strategy. In other situations, particularly when someone is in custody, moving the case forward quickly may be a priority.
