Ambient lighting can create a relaxing atmosphere, but it shouldn't make hazards difficult for guests to see.

An unmarked step or change in elevation in a dimly lit hotel lounge can create a serious trip hazard.
Hotel properties should make sure walkways, steps, and changes in elevation are clearly visible and properly marked.

A guest shouldn't have to guess where the floor drops.

Moving walkways are designed to help guests get where they're going, not put them at risk.

An unexpected stop or malfunction can cause guests to lose their balance, especially when they're carrying luggage or traveling through a crowded area.

Proper inspection and maintenance can help prevent dangerous equipment failures.

A hotel bathroom should be a safe place for guests. But a leaking shower can allow water to spread onto surrounding tile, creating a dangerous slip hazard.

Hotels should address leaks and other maintenance issues before they cause someone to get hurt.

A relaxing shower shouldn't end with an unexpected injury.

Casino guests expect chairs and other property equipment to be safe and properly maintained.

A damaged or defective chair can create an unexpected hazard, especially when guests have no reason to believe it's unsafe.

When equipment fails and someone gets hurt, the condition of the property matters.

Taking vacation photos could capture more than the perfect family memory.

A photo taken before an injury may unintentionally document a dangerous condition, a broken walkway, a missing warning sign, poor lighting, a damaged railing, or another hazard.

After an injury, those photos may help show what a property looked like at the time of the incident.

When you're traveling, keep your photos. You never know what they may capture.

Poor lighting can make a hotel parking garage more dangerous than it needs to be.
Burned-out lights can make curbs, cement barriers, uneven pavement, and other obstacles difficult to see.
Hotels should inspect and maintain parking areas so guests can safely navigate the property.
A walk back to your car shouldn't end with a fall.

A hotel spa is designed for relaxation, but wet floors and other unsafe conditions can turn that experience into an injury.

Locker rooms, steam rooms, hot tubs, showers, and treatment areas should be regularly inspected and maintained.
Wet surfaces should be addressed and appropriate warnings provided when necessary.
Luxury amenities still require safe conditions.

Who let the dogs out?!!!
When a hotel knows a guest has a registered pet, and the room is marked with a pet door hanger, staff should take reasonable care when entering the room.

If housekeeping opens the door and a dog escapes because proper precautions weren't taken, the hotel may be responsible depending on the facts.

Every case is different, but hotels have a duty to act reasonably when they know a pet is staying in the room.

Happy National Dog Day! 🐾
