✨ DME Tip # 3 💭

🎯 Be sure to introduce yourself to the client!

🎯 Call the client before the exam and review the exam's scope.

🎯 Let the client know who you are and that you will be present during the exam to advocate on their behalf at their attorney's firm.

🎯 Provide education on the exam and how it will differ from typical medical exams.

🎯 Go over the Do's and Don'ts of the exam that is outlined by the attorney's response to the demand.

🎯 Lastly, end the conversation by stating the exam date, time, and location to confirm things with the client.

✨ Treating Post-Op Infections 🤕

👉 Treatment depends on the severity and type of infection, and may require hospitalization for intravenous fluids, fever-reducing medication, or respiratory support.

🎯 Treating post-operative infections typically involves
✅ Antibiotics
✅ Wound care
✅ Surgery
✅ Other supportive care

👉 Avoid harsh chemicals: Do not use hydrogen peroxide or alcohol on the wound, as they can slow healing.

🎯 Nutrition: A diet rich in protein, iron, zinc, and vitamins A and C can help the body fight infection and heal.

🎯 Movement: Gentle movement helps improve blood flow, which aids healing.

⚕️ Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any signs of infection getting worse, such as:

👉 Fever and chills
👉 Increased redness
👉 Swelling
👉 Pain that does not get better with medication
👉 Drainage from the surgical site
👉 Nausea or vomiting that does not improve
👉 Difficulty breathing or chest pain

✨ DME Tip # 2

🎯 Ensure you have a response to the demand letter.

🎯 This provides the nurse observer with information on the plaintiff's attorney's requests and concerns. This will result in the most favorable outcome from the exam.

🎯 It establishes an outline of additional guidelines and items the attorney doesn't want completed during the exam.

🎯 Clarifies Misunderstandings: Sometimes, a demand letter may be based on misunderstandings or incorrect information. Your response offers an opportunity to define your side of the story, which can lead to a more favorable outcome.

🎯 It can foster a more positive dialogue and may lead to a settlement or agreement that works for both parties.

🤕 Post Op signs and symptoms

✨ Keeping an eye out for signs and symptoms of post-operative infections is really important for a smooth recovery.

👉 Here’s a friendly guide to help you recognize what to look for:

⚕️ 1. Increased Redness: While some redness is normal after surgery, if you notice more redness around the surgical area, it might be worth mentioning to your doctor.

⚕️ 2. Swelling: A little swelling is common, but if you notice it's getting bigger or suddenly changes, be sure to check in with your healthcare team.

⚕️ 3. Drainage: If you notice any unusual drainage from your surgical site—such as if it looks thick, yellow, green, or has a funny smell—that could be a sign you should reach out for help.

⚕️ 4. Increased Pain: It's normal to feel some pain after surgery, but if you find that your pain is getting worse or isn't responding to your medication, it’s a good idea to let someone know.

🤒 5. Fever: A fever of 100.4°F (38°C) or higher can signal that something isn't quite right, so make sure to keep track of your temperature.

🤕 6. Feeling Unwell: If you feel off, more tired than usual, or a bit unwell, listen to your body and bring it up with your healthcare provider.

⚕️ 7. Chills or Sweating: If you experience chills or find yourself sweating more than expected, it’s best to check in with someone.

⚕️ 8. Wound Dehiscence: If your surgical wound looks like it’s starting to come apart, make sure to contact your medical team right away.

👉 Following post-operative care instructions, especially wound care, is crucial, and health professionals should encourage patients to follow a nutritious diet to support healing.

👉 Listening to your body and following post-operative care instructions can really make a difference in keeping you healthy and happy.

✨ Post Operative Infections: ✨

🎯Post-operative infections can be a concern after surgery, but understanding them can help ease worries and improve outcomes for everyone involved.

🎯These infections are not just a health issue; they can

👉Prolonged healing times
👉Extend hospital stays
👉Lead to increased healthcare costs

🎯So, what exactly are post-operative infections?

They usually occur within about 30 days after a surgical procedure and can be categorized by how deeply the infection extends.

🎯Some infections are superficial, affecting just the skin and underlying tissues.

Others might reach deeper layers, or even organs and spaces created during surgery.

Bacteria play the most significant role and can either come from the patient’s own body or from outside sources. Common offenders include Staphylococcus aureus (including the tricky methicillin-resistant version, MRSA) and Escherichia coli, among others.

🎯The patient’s condition before surgery can greatly influence the risk of infection. Those with weakened immune systems, chronic conditions like diabetes, or those on certain medications may be at higher risk. Even things like existing skin infections or malnutrition can complicate matters. This is why taking a close look at a patient’s health history before surgery is so important.

🎯Patient education is a vital part of preventing infections after surgery. Patients should be informed about what signs to look out for, such as:

👉Increased redness
👉Swelling
👉Drainage at the surgical site
👉Feeling unwell generally

🎯Following post-operative care instructions, especially wound care, is crucial, and health professionals should encourage patients to follow a nutritious diet to support healing.
