Sherry Booth came up 80 votes short of winning the Democrat Party nomination for Third Judicial District Attorney. I think she ran a great race and surprised a lot of people. I know Fernando Macias, having appeared in front of him for years while he was a district court judge, and I believe he has the qualifications and experience to turn that office around.

The best news is that Gerald Byers reign of incompetence will end this year! His inability to get at least 10% of the vote in this primary is indicative of the abject failure of his tenure as Third Judicial District Attorney. He has certainly been the worst DA this county has seen in my 21 years of practice here. The best thing Mr. Byers could do now is to commit to resigning his position right after the general election in November so that the winner can take office early and start undoing the years of damage he has wrought on the DA's office and the county. I'm sure you did your best, Gerald, but it just wasn't good enough.

The former Doña Ana County manager edged past three Democratic rivals, ousting the incumbent, to run in November.

Please consider donating to the Maui Strong Fund. There are still people—whole families even—living here at the Hyatt Regency and other hotels that were displaced by the wildfires in Lahaina in August. Even though they have been through so much and some have lost their family, friends, and homes, they were still giving aloha to the visitors here. I have been so impressed with this community while here this week.

And, even better, maybe plan a trip to Maui and come to Lahaina especially? I have not encountered anyone here that said we should not have come. In fact, it was the opposite. From the minute I got off the plane, all I have heard is, “Mahalo (thank you) for coming when so many others won’t.” This state and especially this community depends almost entirely on its tourism industry for economic sustainment.

This is my seventh trip to Hawaii, second to Maui. Every time I come, I feel like I am coming home. The beauty of this place is matched by the beauty of the people and culture here. So if you can give some aloha to this community, please do so. On behalf of my firm, I made a donation this morning.
