Call to action: Support Disabled Veterans in Kansas!

The KS Senate Tax Committee failed to pass HB 2036, which would create a property tax exemption for disabled Veterans in Kansas. This bill passed in the Kansas House of Representatives by a vote of 123-1.

Luckily, there is still time to make this property tax exemption a reality, but we need your help. Please take a few minutes of your day to email the following people to show your support for disabled Veterans in Kansas. There is a sample email below that you can copy and paste or use as a starting point to draft your message.

I am reaching out to urge your support for implementing a property tax exemption for disabled Veterans in Kansas. I am deeply concerned about the recent removal and replacement of crucial provisions from Bill 2036 by the Senate Committee. As a member of our state's legislature, you have the power to rectify this situation and ensure that our Veterans receive the support they deserve. Many neighboring states have already enacted property tax exemptions for disabled Veterans without means testing, and Kansas should follow suit. Please prioritize this issue and advocate for its inclusion in the conference committee discussions between the House and Senate. The removal and replacement of these provisions has left our disabled Veterans facing significant financial burdens, and a property tax exemption would provide much-needed relief. By supporting this initiative, you will demonstrate your commitment to honoring the sacrifices made by those who have served our country. Thank you for your attention to this matter. I urge you to take action swiftly to support our disabled Veterans.

Our founding attorney, Javier Centonzio, has been recognized by the Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Foundation Military Matters program for going above and beyond in accepting referrals for service members and veterans of the Kansas City community.

The Military Matters program fills the gap in legal services available to service members and veterans living in the greater Kansas City Metropolitan area. Military Matters collaborates with support agencies serving the service members and veterans in the area to identify the most needed legal services and provide assistance to those who do not qualify for aid from other agencies.

Kansas Veterans, Residents, and Veteran Supporters:Kansas House Bill 2036 would create a property tax exemption for home...

Kansas Veterans, Residents, and Veteran Supporters:

Kansas House Bill 2036 would create a property tax exemption for homestead property owned by and actually and regularly occupied by certain disabled Veterans or surviving spouses of disabled Veterans.

The exemption amount would vary based on the Veteran's overall VA disability rating. The exemption percentage starts at 60% of the property's assessed value for Veterans with a 30% disability rating. Veterans with a disability rating of 70% or higher, those who permanently use a wheelchair, and those who are at least 65 years old would receive a total exemption.

This property tax exemption would be an excellent benefit for Veterans living in Kansas. Many states, such as Florida, Texas, and California, already have property tax exemptions for Veterans. Many Veterans have moved to these states because of this, and passing this law could keep more Veterans here and attract others to call Kansas home.

This bill passed in the Kansas House by a vote of 123-1, with the only "no" vote coming from Rep. Brian Bergkamp (R), who represents District 93, which includes Wichita.

The bill is now in the Kansas Senate awaiting a vote. If you are a Kansas resident in support of this important bill, please reach out to your Kansas State Senator and tell them to get this bill passed and on the Governor's desk ASAP.

My mom always emphasized the importance of education. She told me that education is a tool for change and something that can never be taken away from you. One of my goals in life is to help others seeking an education by establishing scholarships. Thanks to the hard work of my incredible team at Centonzio Law, I recently established a third scholarship - The Centonzio Family Military and Veteran Scholarship at the University of Kansas (KU).

I've always been a Jayhawk at heart, and my goal was to attend KU for my undergrad degree, but life had different plans. The Centonzio Family Scholarship will provide scholarships for undergraduate, military-affiliated students at KU. Preference will be given to prior-service veterans, Reservists, and dependents of current and former military members.
