Facing a serious DUI charge can be overwhelming, especially when the outcome could have life-changing consequences.

In a recent case, Attorney Andrew Alpert helped a client navigate that uncertainty with a straightforward, strategic approach. From the beginning, he made sure the client understood the seriousness of the situation, what to expect, and what needed to be done to build the strongest defense possible.

That preparation and attention to detail carried through to trial, where all charges were dismissed.

Every case is different, and no attorney can promise a particular outcome. But when the stakes are high, having an experienced attorney who will take your case seriously, prepare thoroughly, and advocate for you can make all the difference.

At Alpert Schreyer, we’re proud to stand beside our clients when they need it most.

A DUI case is about more than a number on a Breathalyzer or a blood test. The science behind that evidence matters, too.

A forensic lawyer-scientist can examine the testing methods, equipment, procedures, and handling of evidence to identify potential errors or weaknesses that could affect the reliability of the results.

Attorney Andrew Alpert brings that specialized knowledge to DUI defense as the holder of the Forensic Lawyer-Scientist Designation, recognized by the Chemistry and the Law Division of the American Chemical Society. He is also Maryland’s first and only attorney to become board-certified in DUI Defense Law by the National College for DUI Defense.

When your driving privileges, finances, career, and future are at stake, every piece of evidence deserves a careful examination.

Recent reports indicate that the U.S. State Department has revoked thousands of visas under its continuous vetting program, with DUI-related offenses among the reasons cited for visa revocations.

For foreign nationals, a DUI charge can carry consequences beyond the criminal case itself. Depending on the circumstances, it may affect your visa status, future visa renewals, international travel, or other immigration matters. Every case is different, but the potential immigration implications make it especially important to take DUI charges seriously.

If you are in the U.S. on a visa and have been arrested for DUI in Maryland, don't assume the consequences end in criminal court. Seeking experienced legal representation as early as possible can help you better understand your rights, legal options, and the potential impact on your future.

Think you know your rights during a DUI stop? There are many misconceptions about breathalyzer tests in Maryland.

One common question is whether you can refuse a breathalyzer test. In Maryland, drivers do have the right to refuse chemical testing—but that decision comes with consequences. Under the state’s implied consent law, refusing a breath test can result in an automatic driver’s license suspension, separate from any criminal DUI charges.

A first-time refusal may lead to a 270-day license suspension, while repeat refusals can result in longer suspensions. A refusal could also become part of the evidence considered in a DUI case.

Understanding your rights before making a decision is critical. If you’re facing a DUI or DWI charge in Maryland, the attorneys at Alpert Schreyer can review the details of your case, explain your options, and help protect your future.

For H-1B visa holders, a DUI charge can have consequences that extend far beyond the courtroom.

Even a first-time DUI may affect your immigration status, future visa renewals, or your ability to reenter the United States after traveling abroad. In some cases, a reduced charge or probation before judgment may still raise concerns during the immigration process.

When your career, immigration status, and future are all on the line, it's critical to have experienced legal representation from the very beginning.

If you're an H-1B visa holder facing DUI charges in Maryland, Alpert Schreyer can help you understand your legal options and work to protect your future.

Think you know Maryland's DUI laws? The legal BAC limit is only part of the story.

For most drivers, a BAC of 0.08% or higher can result in a DUI charge. However, drivers with a BAC of 0.07% may still face a DWI charge, while commercial drivers are held to a 0.04% limit and drivers under 21 are subject to Maryland's zero-tolerance laws.

It's also important to know that refusing a chemical test doesn't necessarily avoid the consequences. Under Maryland's implied consent law, a refusal can lead to immediate administrative penalties, including a driver's license suspension.

If you're arrested for DUI or DWI, don't assume the outcome is already decided. Every case is different, and factors such as the traffic stop, BAC testing procedures, and police conduct may all play a role in your defense

With the Fourth of July weekend here, Maryland police will be increasing DUI checkpoints and patrols across the state.

Drivers can expect heightened enforcement in areas including:

• Baltimore City: Fells Point, Federal Hill, Canton, and the Inner Harbor
• Anne Arundel County: Downtown Annapolis exits, Route 2, and the BWI corridor
• Montgomery County: Bethesda, Silver Spring, and Rockville entertainment districts
• Prince George's County: Route 1 near College Park and the National Harbor area
• Major highways including I-95, I-70, I-83, I-495 (Capital Beltway), US-50, and MD-295
• Fireworks displays, festivals, popular restaurants and bars, and beach routes to and from the Eastern Shore and Ocean City

If you're stopped at a DUI checkpoint, stay calm, provide requested identification, and know your rights. While you must stop at a lawful checkpoint, you also have important constitutional protections if you're ultimately arrested.

The best way to avoid a DUI is to plan ahead. If you'll be celebrating America's 250th birthday with some drinks, arrange for a designated driver, rideshare, or another safe way home before the celebrations begin.

From all of us at Alpert Schreyer, we wish everyone a happy & safe July 4th weekend!
