Contrary to popular belief, a notary’s stamp does NOT make a document valid or legally binding. Notarization confirms the identity, awareness, and willingness of the signer, not the content of the document itself. Rather than creating legality, notarization adds an additional layer of authentication that is required for some documents.

A quick reminder that not all documents are created equal.

Most need to be signed in front of your notary so we can witness the signature as it happens, but a few are more flexible. The most common example is an acknowledgment, which lets you sign ahead of time as long as you show up and confirm it’s really yours.

If you’re ever unsure, no stress. Bring it along and I’ll point you in the right direction.
