This is not the update I wanted to share, but it's important for those who care about Embers to understand what is happening.

Earlier this week, she was found in Dallas, Texas in a diabetic coma. She has significant damage to her brain, and a very poor chance of a meaningful recovery.

At this time Embers is in an ICU with her family, who will be making decisions about her care in the coming days and weeks with her medical team knowing that she is not likely to recover.

Honored to be with Jax’s family on this important day.

I co-hosted Transgender Day of Visibility. On the Senate floor we honored Jax Gratton and remembered her kindness and contributions to her community. We are committed to fighting the discrimination, violence, and injustice faced by Jax and trans people across the state. Thank you to all who came to celebrate this day.

It feels surreal to write this.

This morning we were informed that—since the creation of the initial committee was done by resolution—we have passed the largest hurdle for oversight in Lakewood. This little struggle born from grief became a statewide struggle, and after months of grueling work we passed our biggest hurdle.

The process has never been fair. Community was silenced and placed second tier to Lakewood Police over and over. We had our public comments cut off. We had our community mistreated. Last night, Lakewood Police showed up in a two lined formation 40+ deep mostly uniformed and armed. They stood in front of the door while people attempted to enter the building.

Still, we did not back down. That was our promise to Jax and to each other.

There is still so much to do, but in a world of so much loss, we have to celebrate these wins.

We will share details soon for our gathering to reconvene, celebrate, and plan our next steps.
