The Larry D. Hardaway Celebration of Life and Memorial Service will be held on Friday, October 1, 2021 at 3:00 p.m. at Victory Church in Lakeland. The family is making this opportunity available to the community to honor Larry’s legacy of advocacy and service. The family also asks that attendees please wear face coverings and utilize the spaciousness of the facility to distance themselves. Victory Church is located at 1401 Griffin Road, Lakeland, FL 33810.

In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established with the GiveWell Community Foundation. All funds, one hundred percent of the assets contributed to the Larry D. Hardaway Memorial Fund at GiveWell will be transferred to the Polk Education Foundation into a scholarship fund established by the Virgil Hawkins Bar Association in conjunction with Larry’s family. He blessed and touched the lives of so many. Your gifts will help to launch the effort to honor his legacy of advocacy and service.

Family and Friends,

We would like to take the opportunity to thank you all for your calls, texts, emails, visits, and prayers during this difficult time. Larry was loved and cherished by so many from all over and the warmth and comfort we have received has been so appreciative. Larry loved his family, friends, and community so much and made it his passion to helping others as often as possible. His lifetime of public service and civil rights activism will never be forgotten. As we mourn this loss, we find comfort in knowing that not only did he live such a prestigious life, but that he loved GOD and we will be seeing him again. Revelations 21:4 gives us comfort that “And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.”

ATTY GEORGE ALLEN will describe what it means to be the first Black American to graduate from Florida's once segregated Colleges and Universities, University of Florida, in 1962.
ALBERT BETHUNE( 93years old ), son of Dr. MARY MCLEOD BETHUNE, will tell us about his mom's encouragement of Virgil Hawkins when he was at BCC in 1949.
FAMU Law Professor REGINALD MITCHELL will provide and describe several significant colleges added to FAMU as a consequence of Hawkin's efforts.

POLK COUNTY SPORTS BASH

For the first time in Polk County's history, a special weekend is planned that includes the telling of the " life and legacy " of one of Florida's greatest trail blazers, Virgil Hawkins , and the gathering of more than 20 former great college football players from the University of Florida and the University of Miami. NBA Otis Birdsong and Nick Anderson will appear along with NFL great Ken Riley. This will occur this weekend in Lakeland Florida, February 26th and 27th.

On Friday February 26th, at 6 PM at the SACKETT RANCH, 4720 Hancock Lake Road Lakeland Florida, the Florida Gators will compete against the Miami Hurricanes in players telling stories about playing football. The Hurricanes are bringing 5 members of their 1983 National Championship team. Stories to include the best football game a player has ever played in and the funniest moment on a football field. THE VIRGIL HAWKINS STORY
"Why You Should Not Miss This Presentation"

The story of the life of Virgil Hawkins, his life's quest to become a Florida lawyer, the challenges he faced and the time it took to become that lawyer, his unselfish willingness to give up the opportunity to be the first Black American to enter white segregated colleges and Universities so that others could benefit, the opposition he faced from major governmental institutions of the State of Florida, and the invaluable legacy of his actions, make up, for me, one of the most significant civil rights' efforts in Florida and our Nation's history.

You should not miss this presentation because significant persons from around the State of Florida and places out of the state are coming to help tell the story, because those around the country who have told portions of the story are coming to Lakeland Florida to hear and see this presentation, and because some of the presenters coming are among the few who participated in the life of Virgil Hawkins that are still alive. Virgil died in 1988. All of the lawyers who represented him have died. Some presenters are more than 90 years old. You should come see some of the people who remain.
