Want to stress out your divorce attorney? Here’s how…

1. Update your drivers license during your divorce. Ahh!! We need your drivers license to prove jurisdiction. Yes, it can be proven other ways but your DL is the easiest. Just let us know in advance. Not the day or trial.

2. Ok wait!! You can’t just list the house for sale during the pendency of your divorce unless there is an agreement or court order. Holy crap!! We needed to discuss this BEFORE you signed a listing agreement.

3. No. No. No. School changes have to be agreed upon while your divorce is pending and generally after. Don’t unenroll the kids or make major changes without a phone call to your attorney FIRST.

4. Huh?!? I thought we were asking for alimony and you moved your boyfriend into the house?!? Ok sure…bye bye alimony. 💸💸

5. A 401(k) loan?!? When your retirement is a marital asset and you’re not to dissipate marital assets?!? Why?! We should discuss the consequences of depleting a marital asset. Seriously.

6. Your employer wants to transfer you to another state and give you a promotion and a raise?! Now?!? It’s nothing we can’t handle but now I’m stressed.

I had a client schedule plastic surgery in time to show up looking FIRE 🔥 because she wanted to let her EX know that her new hot body was something he’d never touch.

It was pretty awesome!!

I had a client pack her

“Recently Divorced! Buy me a drink” 🍸🥂

in her purse and put it on in the bathroom after we exited the hearing room. She was on her way to meet her girlfriends to celebrate!! ♥️

What did you wear to your last divorce hearing?

Here it is…plain and simple. Trial strategy for testimony.

1. Answer the question asked and not the question you want to be asked. ✅

2. Answer the question in short, direct sentences. Don’t ramble. This is not story time. ✅

3. Answer the question like a human. Not some legal jargon that you think makes you sound smart. ✅

1. Make faces at the opposing party. Stare them down like you want to come across the table because you can’t control your emotions in public. 🚫🙄

2. Try to convince the judge that you are smarter than the judge. 😂🚫

3. Don’t listen to directions. When there’s an objection, keep talking. 😵🚫

You think these are obvious tips but I’m telling you that for some…it’s harder than you think.

Habits or maybe just superstitious routines that I’m going to share with you.

1. When the hearing is finished, I beeline for the elevator.

2. When I get to the first floor, I hang out with my client and go over it all. Time to understand what happened and what happens next.

3. Get in the car, call my paralegal. I gotta talk it out.

Every single time. I’m a creature of habit.

So…when the hearing is over, I get on the elevator and LEAVE. When I was new baby attorney, I lingered one time and the judge actually called everyone back into the courtroom and changed his ruling. 😳 It was horrible. Ever since…I’m outta there. So…leave. Get outta there. Just in case.

When I get downstairs to the little restaurant or by the parking garage, I go over what just happened with my client. Play by play. Sometimes clients may not have understood the legalese of it all or the Judge spoke too fast or their emotions just blocked it all. I want to make sure my client understands what happened and what happens next. You need to collect yourself and figure out what just happened and what happens next.

Lastly, I call my paralegal. I have to update her play by play. I can’t wait to get back to the office. I have to tell her now and we talk it out. You need to have that one person that you can talk to or vent to because it’s necessary for your mental health.
