Here's another police dog shooting case...one is too many...

The federal lawsuit comes days after another MDPD officer fatally shot a puppy near Miami Gardens.

We were contacted and we are now representing Mr. McLaurin.

A disabled veteran and his service dog were recently denied entry to Tampa's Busch Gardens. Anthony McLaurin, who has been diagnosed with PTSD, has a TBI and hearing loss as a result of his 16 years serving our country, was met by a park supervisor who told him he did not know the policy on service dogs, and would find another supervisor. McLaurin's wife and young son were standing by, and he told them to go on ahead of him inside the park; that he would catch up with them.

After being detained for several minutes, a park operating officer met with McLaurin and asked him what kind of service his dog provided him. McLaurin answered, "She is a PTSD service dog who touches me with her nose or paw when I show signs of anxiety." The park operating officer told McLaurin "that was not a good enough answer."

A Tampa Police Officer and Hillsborough County Sheriff Deputy stood about six feet away observing the situation. Eventually, McLaurin and his family were asked to leave the park, which they did after he spoke with Lynn, his dog's trainer, as well as Bart, the founder of the organization who trains dogs for wounded veterans.

Advocates for Service Animal Partners is now assisting McLaurin in filing the necessary complaints to bring accountability on the parts of both Busch Gardens and local law enforcement. Complaints have been filed with the United States department of Justice, Disability Rights Florida, the City of Tampa Human Rights Office, and the City of Tampa Police Department’s Professional Standards Division. According to the Advocates for Service Animal Partners, McLaurin's case will be pursued against Busch Gardens and the staff that violated Mr. McLaurin’s civil rights and better training about service animals for the Tampa Police Department and the Hillsborough County Sherrif’s Office.

According to Florida law, “A public accommodation must modify its policies, practices, and procedures to permit use of a service animal by an individual with a disability.” 413.08(2) f.s. Violation of this statute is a second degree misdemeanor. 413.08(4) f.s.)
