Mold coverage in an insurance policy is usually optional and often limited to $10,000 dollars. In our experience, insurance companies have tried to label the cause of the claim as mold to limit their exposure or they deny the claim entirely. However, in most cases, the mold growth was not the actual cause of the damage but rather a result of a covered loss, which is usually water damage. It is important to have experienced attorneys by your side to distinguish between a loss caused by mold, which is usually limited to $10,000 dollars under most insurance policies and mold resulting from another covered loss. If the resulting mold was caused by water damage, then your entire claim should not be limited to your insurance policy’s mold endorsement, which is usually $10,000 dollars.
