Most parents think they would.

Many are surprised to learn what changes when a child turns 18.

Once your child becomes a legal adult, HIPAA treats them as an independent adult. That means you no longer automatically have the same access to their medical information that you had when they were a minor.

In some emergencies, healthcare providers may share limited information with family members based on their professional judgment. But you should never assume you'll automatically have access or be able to make decisions on your child's behalf.
