Many families have purchased (or have inherited) family vacation homes. While these family vacation homes can create wonderful family memories, they can also be a source of contention. How do you reconcile the goal of family fun, family reunions and vacations with the practical realities of operating and maintain the family vacation home?

Many families have purchased (or have inherited) family vacation homes at the Oregon Coast, Sunriver, Black Butte or ski cabins on Mt. Hood. While these family vacation homes can create wonderful family memories, keep the extended family together, they can also be a source of contention when the own...

I watched the coronation ceremony of King Charles III. I was especially impressed with the participation of the different faith communities; Jewish, Islam, Hindu, Sikh, Reform, Orthodox, and Roman Catholic. Beautiful tradition and music.

I am pleased to announce that I have transitioned into a Senior Counsel role at Buckley Law as of August 1, 2022. As Senior Counsel, I will continue to have consultations with clients on complex matters when I can add value and bring my knowledge and experience to the situation.

I will be available to make client introductions to my partners and be an “ambassador” for the firm to various civic and community organizations. I am not going away or “retiring” in the traditional sense. This transition is a positive move that involves other members of our firm as we continue to provide you excellent service now and, in the future.

Personal note from Rob Le Chevallier I am pleased to announce that I have transitioned...

Consider these 9 Estate Planning Resolutions for the New Year

Estate Planning Resolutions for the New Year. Update the old will or trust that you have been procrastinating about. If it is more than 10 years old, the tax provisions no longer work in most cases. Make sure your personal representative or successor trustee is still up to the task. Plan for state e...

The 50% reduction in the $11.7 million federal estate tax exemption was dropped from the Build Back Better bill in the House of the Representatives on October 28th. Many of my wealthier clients were in serious gifting mode this fall fearing the loss of the federal exemption in 2022. Now we have three more years to plan until the Trump tax act expires on 12/31/2025. Here in Oregon our state estate tax starts at $1 million so gifting still makes sense to avoid that tax as long as you are under the federal exemption. The tradeoff is the loss of the step up in basis so a good tax analysis is needed first!
