Mel was the ninth overall pick in the 1981 NFL Draft by the Los Angeles Rams where he spent his entire 10-year pro career. During his tenure with the Rams, their defense ranked in the NFL’s top 5 for two seasons in a row. In Week 3 of 1986 Owens was named the NFC Defensive Player of the Week by the NFL. Like many professional athletes, Mel suffered injuries that forced him to miss games. And while

his injuries on the field were not life-threatening or life-altering, he saw and heard of many players who were not so lucky. After he left the NFL, Mel attended the University of California at San Francisco – Hastings College of Law where he received his law degree. In 2006, he partnered with Patrick N. Namanny and Thomas J. Byrne to form NBO Law where he works assisting current and former professional athletes with their worker’s compensation and disability claims in California state court.
