I discovered that the Bend, Oregon Police Department recently re-named a dog out of concern of racial overtones. So I report BPD to inquire as to the impact of re-naming the dog.

Lt. Russell,

I have discovered that the Bend, Oregon police department changed the name of a police animal "Lil' Kim" after community concern brought to your attention the racist overtones (albeit unintentional) that this name had on the community of Bend.

We in Lafayette have a similar issue where the Lafayette Police Department is using a disgusting Polish racial slur for the Roma people, "Cygan", as a name for city property. This racial moniker here is highly offensive as well, being akin to naming the dog the N word or other horrific racial slur. This is especially concerning given how our police department has ties to White Supremacy and racism, as they hired a Neo-Nazi in 2020 which we pointed out and they fired him.

However, we now have the dog name issue. I was advised by our Chief of Police that the police here, despite the racial slur, will not be re-naming the dog as that would have a negative impact on interaction with the animal. Obviously that was not the case for your department.

What was the impact on your dog when it was re-named? I am told by DVMs that this is not an issue but one of training. In fact our police do not even use the racial slur when interacting with the animal they use "Siggy" (after the firearm manufacturer I assume) so you can understand my confusion in refusing to dump the racist name.

Do you or your department make a report after the re-naming? If so, I am very interested in obtaining it.

As well, our of curiosity what was the new name?

I thank you for your time.

Great to speak with the Media last night. I hope they take interest in the Lafayette Police Department's decision to name a police dog after a racial slur.

There is no reason my city government should be associated with racism and white supremacy. Change the name of the dog, no need for the slur.

Wait and see.

Prosecutors have what I call the "Chateau General" mindset. They do not care about their communities as they need not care (most elections uncontested) and are far away in isolated neighborhoods with increased police presence.

I saw it when they destroyed my neighborhood but not giving two goshdarns about an art teacher murdered on my street. The prosecutors that botched the case are now judges.

Less apparent in small counties, but always present.

These cases always bring tensions to rise but I think they are instructive.

Lessons to draw on here:

1. Someone taught the officer that this was acceptable and that he could get away with this.

2. There have to be systemic consequences. This means abolishing qualified immunity. End the unconstitutional, racist doctrine of qualified immunity and this nonsense ends tomorrow.
