YOU SHOULD KNOW: 👋 SD County reps are discussing a major increase to the Documentary Transfer Tax. If approved, big‐ticket sales could see dramatically larger transfer costs. What is this?

In San Diego County, the standard Documentary Transfer Tax (DTT) is $0.55 per $500 (or $1.10 per $1,000) of the property's value, collected when recording a deed, with potential for higher local city taxes in some areas. While San Diego County uses the base rate, proposals are being considered to significantly increase this cap for high-value properties, potentially adding tens of thousands in tax.
REAL WORLD EXAMPLE: For a $1,000,000 Home
$1,000,000 / $500 x 0.55 = $1,100

This transfer tax fee is part of the seller or buyer closing costs during a real estate transaction. It is negotiable but typically paid for by the Seller.
