Definitely didn’t have “get a random call from The Washington Post” on my bingo card today. 😂
I got a call from Washington Post writer Maggie Penman after she came across the video I shared about how Dolly Parton directly impacted my life and my family.
She asked if she could interview me and hear more about my story, including the impact Dolly has had on so many of us here in East Tennessee.
What a cool and completely unexpected experience!
I shared that video simply because Dolly’s generosity had a very real impact on my life, and I wanted to honor what she meant to me and our community. I certainly never expected it to reach someone at The Washington Post.
Pretty wild how far one story can travel.
I’ve attached a few photos from the article. Still a little surreal seeing my name in The Washington Post! 😂

Remembering Dolly Parton ❤️

I typically don’t make videos when a celebrity passes away. Not because their lives didn’t matter, but because most of the time I didn’t know them and their passing doesn’t directly affect my life.

This one feels different.

Dolly Parton had a real impact on my family.
My kids have grown up receiving books through Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. But long before that, Dolly’s generosity impacted my own life.

Growing up here in Sevier County, college wasn’t something my family had the means to simply pay for. Because of a scholarship Dolly helped provide for local students, I was able to attend college and receive an education that otherwise may not have been possible for me.
That’s something I’ll never forget.

Dolly became known around the world, but she never forgot where she came from. She invested in the children, families, and people of her own community, the same community my family and I call home.

What an incredible example of what it looks like to use what you’ve been given to make life better for other people.

Most of us will never have Dolly’s resources or platform, but we can all follow her example. Serve people. Give when you can. Invest in your community. And leave things a little better than you found them.

Thank you, Dolly. ❤️

You were an incredible light to East Tennessee and far beyond it. I can only hope we continue serving this community with even a fraction of the generosity and love that you showed it.

Rest in peace, Dolly. You made a difference in my life.

Oh my. They grow up fast. Parents, savor every second. Even if your kids are "older" you will look back one day and realize how young they are right now and wish you had that time back. ❤️🥲 Be careful not to work your life away. Be present in every moment.

You don’t have to be the same person you were yesterday.
You can change your habits. Change your attitude. Change the way you treat people. Change the way you show up for your family. Change the way you show up for yourself.
Your past can explain who you’ve been, but it doesn’t have to decide who you’re becoming.
Growth doesn’t always happen in huge, life-changing moments. Sometimes it starts with one small decision:
I’m going to do better today.
And then you wake up tomorrow and make that decision again.
Keep growing. Keep learning. Keep becoming. 🙌

I don’t talk about this part of our lives nearly enough.

My wife and I have had the privilege of opening our home to children through foster care, and our family has also been forever changed through adoption.

It isn’t always easy. In fact, sometimes it’s incredibly hard. There are goodbyes, uncertainty, interrupted plans, difficult days, and a whole lot of emotions that come with loving a child knowing you may not get to keep them.

But I’ve come to believe something pretty strongly:

As Christians, we can’t just say we care about vulnerable children. We have to be willing to do something about it.

For some people, that may mean fostering. For others, adoption. It could mean supporting a foster family, providing respite care, donating, mentoring, praying, or simply showing up when a family needs help.

I also realize I’ve shared very little about what my wife and I have actually experienced through fostering and adoption. The good, the difficult, the funny, the heartbreaking, and the incredibly rewarding parts.

I think I want to change that.

Not because we have all the answers. We definitely don’t. But if sharing more of our story encourages even one family to ask, “Could we do this?” then it’s worth talking about.

There are kids right now who need someone willing to show up.

Maybe that someone is you. ❤️

🌱 Growth doesn’t always feel like growth while you’re going through it.

Sometimes it looks like struggle. Sometimes it feels like failure. And sometimes it just plain hurts.

But discomfort isn’t always a sign that something is going wrong. Sometimes it’s evidence that you’re being stretched into the person you’re capable of becoming.

Don’t be so quick to run from the hard seasons. The pressure you’re feeling today may be producing the strength you’ll need tomorrow.

Keep growing. The pain won’t last forever, but what you learn from it can. 💪
