United Way of Blount County has created a resource guide to help individuals and families navigate the challenges caused by the current government shutdown.

This guide includes information about local resources, such as food assistance, utility support, housing, and other essential services—available to those who may be affected.

We know this is a difficult time for many in our community, and we’re here to help connect people with the support they need. Please share this information with anyone who may find it useful. This is a working resource, and we’ll keep updating it to meet community needs.

We celebrate and honor Black History Month. Current Black History maker Ketanji Brown Jackson was sworn in as first Black woman and 116th Supreme Court justice on June 30, 2022. Justice Jackson graduated magna cm laude from Harvard University, then attended Harvard Law School, where she graduated cm laude and was an editor of the Harvard Law Review.

Judge Brown wore a necklace of cowrie shells to the inauguration. “In many African traditions, cowrie shells are believed to carry protective properties and spiritual significance,” said historian Shelby Christie. “They’re often seen as conduits of ancestral wisdom and protection, used in divination practices and spiritual ceremonies.”
