Today, Tennessee and the world lost someone truly special.

Dolly Parton was more than an icon. She was a storyteller, a philanthropist, a champion for children and families, and a source of pride for generations of Tennesseans.

From the mountains of East Tennessee to stages around the world, Dolly never forgot where she came from. Through her music, her generosity, and programs like the Imagination Library, she leaves behind a legacy that will continue touching lives for generations.

For those of us who call East Tennessee home, this loss feels especially close. Dolly represented so much of what makes our part of the world special: kindness, resilience, humor, generosity, and an unwavering love for home.

Our hearts are with Dolly’s family, friends, loved ones, and the countless people whose lives she touched.

Thank you, Dolly, for making Tennessee proud. Your light will be deeply missed, but the good you put into this world will live on.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the Second Saturday Divorce Workshop.

This past Saturday, Oldfield Law Tennessee had the privilege of hosting the Second Saturday Divorce Workshop here in Knoxville.

We’re especially grateful to Joni Scates Beachly, CDFA® with Principal and Mac McEntee with Healing Hearts for joining our own Attorney Jason Beddingfield to provide attendees with legal, financial, and emotional perspectives on divorce.

One of the things we value most about events like this is the opportunity to collaborate with other professionals in our community.

Divorce affects far more than someone's legal status. It can impact finances, children, relationships, emotional well-being, and plans for the future. Bringing professionals from different fields together allows us to provide people with a broader understanding of the resources and support available to them.

And that is exactly what this workshop is about: education, resources, and helping people make informed decisions about what comes next.

To everyone who attended, asked questions, shared their experiences, and trusted us with a few hours of their Saturday, thank you.

And to Joni and Mac, thank you for sharing your knowledge and for partnering with us to serve our East Tennessee community.

Oldfield Law Tennessee is pleased to welcome Lora Smith to the firm as a Law Clerk, starting Monday, August 24th.

Lora interned with us this past spring, and we're glad to have her back in this new role. She is currently a Juris Doctor Candidate, Class of 2027, at Lincoln Memorial University – Duncan School of Law, where she is a member of the Mock Trial Team, the Student Bar Association, and the Knoxville Bar Association.

Please join us in congratulating Lora and welcoming her to the team.

The law doesn't stand still, and neither can we.

Effective July 1, 2026, Tennessee's Public Chapter 683 (HB 590/SB 609) changed how our courts evaluate parenting schedules. Courts must now explicitly consider whether a proposed parenting plan gives each parent a meaningful opportunity to participate in their child's life, consistent with the child's best interest, when establishing or modifying custody arrangements.

That may sound like a small statutory tweak, but it isn't. Previously, this idea existed only as introductory language in Tennessee's custody statute, directing courts to permit "the maximum participation possible" by both parents. Public Chapter 683 elevates that principle into a distinct factor courts must weigh alongside the other best-interest considerations in TCA § 36-6-106. For parents seeking real, meaningful time with their children, that distinction matters.

This is exactly why I tell our team that staying current on the law isn't optional in this profession; it's the job. Family law changes every legislative session, and the families we represent deserve counsel who knows the moment a new statute shifts the ground beneath a custody case.

If you have questions about how this change could affect your parenting plan or an upcoming custody matter, my team and I are glad to help.
