After years of watching how insurance companies handle and sometimes downplay property damage claims, here’s what I would NEVER let happen if it were my own claim👇

1️⃣ Starting repairs before documenting everything.
This is mistake #1, hands down. If you repair or throw out damaged property before photographing it, you lose your strongest evidence. Photo and video of EVERYTHING, from multiple angles, before you touch a thing.

2️⃣ Waiting to report the damage.
Most policies require “prompt” notice. Every day you wait gives the insurer one more reason to question or reduce your claim.

3️⃣ Throwing away damaged materials.
Keep the damaged flooring, the piece of drywall, the affected furniture until the adjuster has inspected (unless it’s a health hazard). Without the physical evidence, it’s your word against theirs.

4️⃣ Skipping temporary repairs.
Your policy also requires you to prevent further damage (tarping a broken roof, shutting off a leaking pipe). Skip this and they can reduce your payout by claiming you failed to mitigate and keep every receipt.

5️⃣ Accepting the first offer without questioning it.
The first number almost never reflects the real cost of repair. Review it, challenge what doesn’t add up, and get a second opinion before you sign anything.

📌 None of these rules depend on you being “right” they depend on you being able to prove it. That’s the difference between a claim paid in full and one cut in half.

Florida law does not allow an insurer to deny a claim just because of roof age. Age is frequently used as an excuse, but if a covered event caused the damage, the claim can still be valid.
A and B are both true under current Florida law.
