On this day in 1975, Joseph W. Hatchett was sworn in as the first Black Justice on the Florida Supreme Court, appointed by Governor Reubin Askew. At just 42 years old, he broke racial barriers in the deep South, paving the way for greater representation in the judiciary.

Hatchett’s journey started when he graduated from Florida A&M University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1954. His career spanned decades of public service: from earning his law degree at Howard University, serving as an assistant U.S. Attorney, to becoming a U.S. Magistrate Judge. After his groundbreaking appointment, he became the first Black person to win a statewide contested judicial election in Florida in 1976

His trailblazing continued with a presidential appointment to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit in 1979, another “first” for a Black jurist in the South.
