The Kettering Arts Council is proud to present Member Spotlights!

We’re excited to share interviews with current KAC members to highlight their personal and professional experiences in the arts. These spotlights celebrate the creativity, passion and people that help to make our arts community so vibrant.

Be sure to check out this enlightening discussion with Arts Council Member Tracy McElfresh as she shares her thoughts and experiences with the arts.

What do you like about the arts in Kettering?

We live in a town with so many opportunities. There’s a high standard of art classes, thoughtful gallery shows and meaningful community events. The arts here feel accessible and alive.

Was there a moment when art changed how you saw the world?

As a child, art simply made me feel good. But it’s so much more than that. It’s problem solving, self expression, activism, beauty. It’s who we are as humans.
When someone tells me, “I don’t have an artistic bone in my body,” I just smile. After a few minutes of conversation, they absolutely do. Any creative endeavor is art. Singing, painting, writing, dancing, cooking, gardening. It all counts.

Is there an artist who deeply influenced you?

Oh yes. Frida Kahlo for her bold empowerment as a woman. Georgia O’Keeffe, whose work spanned seven decades with such strength and clarity. Also, Grandma Moses, who simply loved making things. She wasn’t worried about perfection. She created because it felt good.

What art form do you wish you had more time to explore?

Relief block printing, without question. I could happily lose hours there.

Has your taste in art changed over the years?

Absolutely. The more I learn, the more my mind expands and the more my taste evolves. Thank you, Rosewood.

Thank you for sharing, Tracy! Stay tuned to hear more interesting interviews with other members of Kettering Arts Council soon!
