January marks the beginning of National Human Trafficking Awareness Month in the United States. This tradition was begun in 2010 by Presidential Proclamation and marks a time for anti-trafficking advocates, survivors, service providers, researchers, and public officials to share information, work toward victim identification and prevention, and lobby for supporting policies.
Following a year in which so much awareness and misinformation has taken place around human trafficking, it is more important than ever that fact-checking and evidence-based advocacy become more normalized. We will be sharing and emphasizing our educational materials and peer-reviewed research this next month to make reliable information as accessible as possible.
As you share information to raise awareness for National Human Trafficking Awareness Month, please check the source of any statistics; be wary of those profiting on scandalizing or sensationalized stories; and above all, listen to survivors.
