Every college-bound student should have a basic legal protection package before move-in day.
A lot of parents don’t realize this…
The moment your child turns 18 and leaves for college, you may no longer have the legal right to:
• speak to doctors
• access medical information
• help with financial emergencies
• handle important records
• make decisions in a crisis
Even if you’re paying the tuition.
Even if they’re on your insurance.
Even if that’s your baby.
College move-in season is exciting… but legally, adulthood starts at 18.
Please don’t wait until there’s an emergency to find out how little access parents actually have.
Every college-bound student should have a basic legal protection package before move-in day.
Documents parents should consider before move-in day:
1. HIPAA Authorization
2. Healthcare Power of Attorney
3. Financial Power of Attorney
4. FERPA Waiver
5. Living Will
6. Digital Asset Authorization
If you have a college-bound student and want to get their legal documents in place before move-in day, send me a message that says “COLLEGE” or schedule a consultation with my office.
A small amount of planning now can make a huge difference during an emergency.
