NEW LOUISIANA LAWS TAKING EFFECT JANUARY 1, 2026

Several important changes to Louisiana law will take effect in 2026 and may impact drivers, homeowners, contractors, and anyone involved in an accident or insurance claim.

Here are a few key updates to be aware of:

🚗 Hands-Free Driving Enforcement
Louisiana’s hands-free driving law will be fully enforced, prohibiting holding or using a phone while driving. Penalties increase in school and construction zones.

⚖️ Changes to Fault in Injury Cases
Louisiana is moving from a pure comparative fault system to a modified system. If a person is found 51% or more at fault, they may no longer be eligible to recover damages in an injury claim.

🏠 Home Fortification Tax Incentives
Homeowners who make qualifying storm-resistant upgrades—such as fortified roofing—may be eligible for expanded tax credits and deductions.

🔨 New Contractor Licensing Requirements
Certain residential roofing and construction work will now require additional state licensing, aimed at protecting homeowners, especially after storms.
