Adoptee Citizenship Act-

This federal legislative bill, if passed, will give permanency to children adopted internationally. This is something that we can all support to allow these children have a permanent standing in our country when they are adopted.

QUICK ABOUT RE: the Adoptee Citizenship Act

Thousands of Americans who were adopted from abroad as children by U.S. citizen parents cannot benefit from the automatic citizenship provision of the Childhood Citizenship Act of 2001 , all because they were 18 years of age or older on February 27, 2001. The Adoptee Citizenship Act of 2022 fixes this issue, ensuring all individuals who were adopted abroad as children by U.S. citizens and are in the United States pursuant to lawful admission can acquire citizenship.

The Act is bipartisan and has bicameral support. Special thanks to Utah Congressman John Curtis for being lead co-sponsor and Congressman Burgess Owens for co-sponsoring the House bill. Versions of this language have been introduced repeatedly beginning in 2013. It is time for Congress to move this solution over the finish line.
