After a scathing report from the FDA in 2022 following an inspection of a CooperSurgical manufacturing facility where they make Paragard IUDs, the company promised to take corrective actions to more actively investigate why the Paragard breaks at a rate of 2x other IUDs. Well, unsurprisingly, when the FDA went back to the facility in 2024 after noticing a significant uptick in reports of device breakage, they found that 7 of the 11 action plans were not being pursued appropriately. https://midmichigannow.com/news/spotlight-on-america/paragards-maker-responds-to-fda-inspections-as-women-continue-to-report-iud-breakage-healthcare-copper-t-shaped-advocate-fda-coopersurgical-procedure-tracy-patterson-nurse?jw_start={seek_to_second_number}

A new study is causing alarm to women who Depo Provera injections and its generic equivalent. The study, published in "The BJM" in March 2024 by French researchers that reviewed the records of more than 100,000 women as part of a case control study, found that there is a 560% greater occurrence of meningioma, in women using this type of high dose progestogen. Meningiomas are a type of brain tumor that is typically noncancerous and grow slowly. They can create pressure on the brain and often require surgical removal. https://www.theguardian.com/society/2024/mar/27/hormone-medication-brain-tumours-risk-progestogens-study

The way the FDA handles medical device recalls isn't always consistent. Notably is the confusing way in which they handle medical devices. Even though the FDA and the companies behind the devices often label certain recalls as "Class I"—which means they pose the highest risk for harm or death—doctors are still allowed to use these devices. In other industries, like food or baby products, dangerous items are usually pulled off the market right away. An example of medical devices is how the FDA handled the MitraClip. Designed to treat leaky heart valves, had three recalls because of safety issues, but it was never taken out of use. Instead, the company just changed the instructions and required doctors to get more training. Some worry this approach could give a false sense of safety and that sometimes, these devices might need to be removed completely to protect patients. The FDA needs to be careful about finding the right balance between managing risks and keeping important medical devices available. https://kffhealthnews.org/news/article/health-brief-fda-medical-device-recalls/

With more and more research coming out about the lack of efficacy of Spinal Cord Stimulators and the unsettlingly close relationship between manufacturer sales reps and medical professionals, Four Corners and ABC News Australia produced a scathing 50 minute long exposé that can be viewed on YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UyaKyS2wTQk&t=4s

Ketamine infusion therapy is gaining greater acceptance for patients with chronic pain like complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS). As it has few side effects, it is being viewed as a safer and much less invasive alternative to the implantation of a Spinal Cord Stimulator (SCS). The concerns over SCS implants are due to numerous studies have shown little to no efficacy and severe correlated isssues with the implants. Some of the more startling issues reported are being shocked by the SCS (even when the battery is turned off) and injuries related to the imparement of the vagus nerve, which has been shown to cause hart arrhythmia, urinary and f***l incontinence, drop-foot, loss of motor function in lower extremities, dysphagia, peristalsis, and gastroparesis among others. https://blog.neuromendcenter.com/ketamine-a-more-comfortable-alternative-to-spinal-stimulators

In continued growing concerns over the rampant adoption of the use of semaglutides and associated drugs prescribed frequently for the 'off label' use of weight loss/management, the FDA's FAERS database now links more than 100 deaths of patients to the drugs since 2018. Concerns continue to grow with the memories of Fen Phen in the not so distant rearview:

The cases have been recorded in an FDA monitoring system used to track the safety of medicines used in the US, called FAERS.
