Registration is now open for the upcoming Media and the Law seminar
Make plans to attend our 37th annual Media and the Law Seminar. We will convene a panel of legal experts and thought leaders to discuss current legal strategies for combating disinformation, emerging IT platforms to address disinformation, the potential for legislation or modifications in jurisprudence to help adapt to the surge of disinformation, ethical pitfalls attorneys face in fighting for the truth and more. The event is hosted by the University of Kansas School of Law and the Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Association Media Law Committee.

What does the growing use of AI mean for defamation law? As technology continues to develop, our laws need to develop alongside them. Our panel, “AI Awry: Defamation for Bots Gone Wrong,” will discuss these developing issues and analyze questions like who should be liable if defamation is spread using AI, how the law strikes balance between protecting free speech without stifling innovation and more.

Amid divided opinions on what constitutes dangerous, extreme or “unprotected” speech, cases involving government efforts to control or silence speech seem to be on the rise. From state actors policing speech in schools to state legislatures passing laws aimed at social media companies, from efforts by local officials to quell protests to efforts by prisons to restrict the communication of people who are incarcerated, threats to First Amendment rights touch all areas of today’s society. A panel titled “Too Hot to Handle? Defending Speech in the Face of Government Censorship” will feature commentary and perspectives from the attorneys at the forefront of the fights against these threats.
