KCMBF’s Military Matters is proud to shine the May Pro Bono Spotlight on Jonathan Lowrey of Lowrey Legal LLC.
Lowrey initially heard about the Military Matters volunteer opportunity through a presentation by Shawn Lee explaining how Military Matters served our respected veteran community. Lowrey has many friends and family that currently serve or have served in the military, including both of his grandfathers, Bill Maberry and Dallas Lowrey. Bill Maberry was active military in WWII and Dallas “Jack” Lowrey was active military during the Korean War and is about to celebrate his 98th birthday. Jonathan Lowrey has fond memories of volunteering to play “Taps” on his trumpet in high school for the Veterans of Foreign Wars members’ final honors on suggestion of his Grandad Dallas Lowrey, and other military members in their community. Lowrey states that this is the experience that helped him develop a “profound appreciation for our veterans”.
Lowrey says that his time with Military Matters has been “absolutely wonderful and every client has been appreciative of the legal work and advice.” Lowrey reflects on a specific case where he was able to assist a veteran in establishing a business using an inheritance that she received. Lowrey says of this experience, “It was neat to be able to help a veteran set up a proper company and procedures to build an ongoing business from start to finish.”
Lowrey initially thought he wanted to be a doctor but realized in his last year of college that his personality fits better in the legal field, where he specializes in pro-business litigation. Within his firm, Lowrey Legal LLC, Lowrey encourages an “open phone” policy to help the public become more educated on the possession and use of fi****ms. Lowrey is occasionally invited to speak on matters about lawful possession, transfer, and legal use of fi****ms under the National Fi****ms Act (NFA), or Missouri and Kansas Law. He finds there is often overlap with clientele that qualify for Military Matters pro bono work and so he also uses this opportunity to refer people from the public to the Military Matters program, where appropriate.
When away from work, Lowrey loves spending time with his beautiful wife, Rachael, who works as an attorney at HR Block, and his rambunctious two-year-old, Lachlaln. Lowrey also enjoys playing pool, paired with a quality whiskey and cigar.
Lowrey’s advice to others interested in getting involved is “Just by virtue of having a law degree, anyone would have something of value to give back to our veterans. It doesn’t have to take a lot of time, and you’ll be glad you did.”
