HAPPY JUNETEENTH!

Juneteenth, also known as Emancipation Day, occurs annually on June 19. It is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of ending slavery in the United States.

Juneteenth commemorates the anniversary of June 19, 1865, when Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger led soldiers to Galveston, Texas, to deliver General Order No. 3. This message stated that the war was over, the Union had won, and it had the manpower to enforce the end of slavery.

The announcement came two months after the effective conclusion of the Civil War and more than two years since President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation.

This is why we celebrate Juneteenth, which honors the day all enslaved were legally freed.

On this Memorial Day my post pictures Lou Masteller, my father in law, who served aboard the USS Bon Homme Richards during the Korean conflict, my maternal grandfather Leroy Demko who, being a first generation Austrian American, joined the Army during WWII & served in Europe where he helped liberate Hitler’s concentration camps. Also pictured is my wife (Dr. Kim Masteller), Lou’s daughter, who earned a Fullbright Scholarship. The Fulbright Program is one of several United States cultural exchange programs with the goal of improving international relations & cultural diplomacy, between the people of the United States and other countries through the mutual exchange of persons, knowledge, and skills. The express goal of the Fulbright program is to make war less likely.
Memorial Day, especially in these times, those of us who work to avoid military conflict and improve cultural diplomacy should also be recognized. I mean you too, Mike Bednar & Tammy Sears.

The Supremes are only being asked to rule on whether Federal Court Justices can issue nationwide injunctive relief. The Supremes are not being asked to rule on the actual issue of whether Trump can get rid of constitutional birthright citizenship using an executive order. He cannot. The law is clear. My prediction is that, because the Supremes are being asked to rule only on that narrow issue, they won’t touch the real issue. Trump will have effectively eliminated birthright citizenship because, as Justice Kagan pointed out today during oral argument, not all persons can afford to challenge the revocation of their citizenship in court. That is why Federal Justices need the power to issue nationwide injunctive relief.
