While today was the first day of school for my sons, it was my first day as a Category II Neutral in the Western District of Missouri’s Mediation and Assessment Program (“MAP”).

“Category II Neutrals” are individuals who have gone through a separate application and review process with the Court to be on the Category II List. The list is not to exceed 25 persons, who have been selected as meeting the qualifications necessary to be considered for assignment to cases at the determination of the Director. Selection to the Category II List is based in part on a review by the MAP Director and a Western District Judge.

I am humbled and honored to join this exceptional group. The depth of talent and expertise within this select community truly inspires, and I am grateful for the chance to learn and contribute alongside such remarkable individuals. I approach this privilege with a sense of humility, eager to share my perspectives, while remaining open to the invaluable insights that my esteemed colleagues bring to the table.

It’s always an honor to meditate (in person!) at the Western District’s gleaming courthouse.

Reunification.

That is the goal of a pro bono family law matter that I have been handling since July 2021.

My “day job” as a solo attorney and mediator involves business disputes, contracts, shareholders, property rights, and the almighty dollar.

This case is something entirely different.

Reuniting a mother and son after a long separation is a powerful moment filled with emotions.  For a mother who has been through trauma and suffers from PTSD, this reunion itself can also be a source of anxiety.  With love, patience, and support, mother and son hopefully can heal and rebuild their bond stronger than before.

As the mother comforts her son, she must also take care of herself, seeking support from loved ones and therapy.  It is a journey of rediscovery and renewal, but with every step forward, their love for each other grows stronger.  Through this quest, they can find peace and healing, creating a new normal and a brighter future together.

Dollars matter.  Honoring business agreements matters.  Property rights matter.

But so too does familial love and its crucial role in promoting and maintaining good mental health, providing a sense of belonging, security, and support.

Here's to a healthy, lasting reunification.

We receive this food in gratitude to all beings
Who have helped to bring it to our table,
And vow to respond in turn to those in need
With wisdom and compassion.

Another timely CLE from the Western District of Missouri’s Mediation and Assessment Program: “Evolution and Lessons: Technology in the Courts and in ADR.”

With the prevalence of video mediation, it is essential to remember that many clients are unfamiliar with the ADR process, let alone remote video appearances. Mediators should be sure to take the time in advance to provide their clients clarity about both mediation procedures and about what to expect during a virtual mediation.
