Welcome, Mack Moeller!

We're pleased to welcome Mack Moeller to McDowell Rice this summer as an intern.

Mack recently graduated from the University of Kansas and will begin his studies at KU Law School this fall. Wanting to stay busy and gain valuable professional experience before starting law school, he joined our team for the summer.

The legal profession runs in the family. Mack's mother, Debbie Moeller, is a former McDowell Rice attorney, and his sister is a litigation attorney as well. While Mack hasn't yet decided which area of law he would like to pursue, we're excited to help introduce him to the profession and provide a firsthand look at the practice of law.

We're happy to have Mack with us this summer and plan to keep him busy over the next couple of months as he prepares for the next chapter of his legal education. We look forward to being part of his journey and wish him continued success at KU Law.

Hollywood Visits the Skelly Building: Terrence Howard Filming Broken Ones on the Plaza in Kansas City

There's been a little extra excitement around the Skelly Building lately.

Actor Terrence Howard has been filming scenes for his upcoming movie *Broken Ones* just outside our offices, bringing a touch of Hollywood to the Plaza. While film productions often create a buzz wherever they go, what has impressed many people most is Howard's friendliness and professionalism throughout the shoot.

Known for acclaimed roles in Crash, Ray, and the television hit Empire, Howard has built a distinguished career spanning decades. Many moviegoers also remember him as James "Rhodey" Rhodes in the original Iron Man film and for his Academy Award-nominated performance in Hustle & Flow.

Despite spending long hours outdoors in temperatures approaching 90 degrees—and doing so while dressed in a suit—Howard has remained gracious and approachable, taking time to acknowledge passers-by, exchange greetings, and make the experience memorable for those fortunate enough to catch a glimpse of the production.

The cast and crew have transformed portions of the Skelly Building into a working movie set, creating a unique backdrop for the workday and showcasing Kansas City's growing appeal as a destination for film and television projects. With the city continuing to attract national attention and preparing to welcome World Cup visitors this month, it's exciting to see another major production choosing Kansas City as its stage.

For those of us at McDowell Rice, it's not every day that a Hollywood production sets up right outside our front door. Watching Broken Ones come to life in the shadow of the historic Skelly Building has been a fun and unexpected reminder that the Plaza continues to be a place where exciting things happen in Kansas City.

Kansas City Is Getting Ready for the World Stage
There’s something special happening around Kansas City right now.

Little by little, the city is starting to look like a true World Cup venue. Flags are appearing. Signs are going up. McDowell Rice is proud to share the success of the Cass Community Health Foundation’s 32nd Annual 5K for Health, which raised more than $102,000 in support of the Cass County Dental Clinic.

Building on our earlier recognition of attorney Rebecca D. Martin’s Platinum-level sponsorship, we are thrilled to see the meaningful impact this event continues to have in our community. Funds raised will help provide essential dental care to children and families throughout Cass County and surrounding areas, ensuring access to services that promote long-term health and well-being.

We had a fantastic time celebrating Cinco de Mayo at McDowell Rice Smith & Buchanan with a festive potluck luncheon! 🌮🎉
From savory favorites to sweet treats, the food was absolutely delicious and showcased some incredible culinary talents across the firm—including Val’s “definitely not stolen from Chipotle” guacamole recipe.
For fun, the luncheon also featured a Mexican heritage trivia questionnaire, demonstrating everyone’s vast knowledge of our neighbor to the south—but more importantly, giving everyone a midday excuse to relax and enjoy each other’s company.
And we can’t forget dessert… Sara’s homemade sopapillas were a huge hit and the perfect way to top off the celebration!
Thank you to everyone who participated and helped make it such a fun and memorable event. We’re already looking forward to next year's!

At McDowell, Rice, Smith & Buchanan, longevity is often a reflection of both dedication and culture—and few embody that more than Dina M. Jones, who is celebrating 23 years with the firm.
Dina’s path to MRSB began after graduate school at the University of Kansas, where she focused on English grammar and linguistics. She initially joined a solo practitioner’s law firm as a technical writer, responding to a recruiter’s ad that aligned perfectly with her academic background. After nearly three years there, she brought her skills, attention to detail, and work ethic to MRSB—where she has remained ever since.
When asked what has kept her here for more than two decades, Dina doesn’t hesitate: it’s the firm’s “family-style” culture. That sense of connection is something colleagues quickly recognize in her as well. Known for maintaining a consistently high standard in her work, Dina is the kind of teammate who steps in wherever needed and approaches every task with reliability and professionalism.
