Let it loose; it will defend itself. This firm has been and always will be for the underdog. We only handpick cases that we believe have the ability to move the scales of justice in the right direction. Sometimes this means choosing cases that others would reject out of fear or the difficult and novel legal battles that they entail. Our unique philosophy is counterintuitive to the pervasive way la
w is practiced today. The Dark Horse mentality is one that signifies a fearlessness in the face of overwhelming opposition. The irony here is that this type of mindset calls for unconventional thought processes and creativity to overcome established barriers. Personal experience by founders and staff show that these barriers, when appropriately and strategically engaged become advantages. The reason for our recent success should come as no surprise to those that recognize refusal to bow to the status quo. Those that come from nothing become resourceful to a degree not common in today’s world. They do not back down even when winning is illogical, because losing is far from optional. In fact, this very attitude is intimidating to those they come across. Malcolm Gladwell artfully illustrates this in his book, “David and Goliath.” It wasn’t that Goliath was ill-equipped to defeat David, it was the fact that David saw his disadvantages as advantages. He refused to succumb to fear and the standardized warfare of his time. Goliath, in turn relied on conventional methods of battle and it ultimately cost him his life. Sun Tzu, in the Art of War, describes this as the difference between bamboo and oak. Bamboo is flexible and able to adapt to even the harshest weather conditions. Oak, while strong, snaps under extreme pressure. Horton Law firm remain adaptable, open-minded, and permeable to new and old ideas. We do not back down nor do we fear new attacks from larger adversaries. Many in today’s legal world still adhere to antiquated thinking to their detriment. We have been told that being unpolished and rugged in a world full of white shoes would hinder us. In fact, it has made us accessible and relatable to our clients and increased our success. It’s not that we don’t possess the necessary education or refinement for eloquent oratory, but rather this approach is ineffective when dealing with your neighbor. People sense condescension and immediately erect barriers when they believe they’re being spoken down to. We make it a point to deliver honest, straightforward, and uncomplicated communications to those we serve. Our visions are bold and unapologetic. As Goethe said,
“Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back — concerning all acts of initiative (and creation), there is one elementary truth that ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans:
that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one’s favor all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance, which no man could have dreamed would have come his way. Whatever you can do, or dream you can do, begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it. Begin it now.“
