It's FIREWORKS Time Again. We want EVERYONE to have a SAFE and ENJOYABLE 4th of July, so please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the City Ordinance below.

FIREWORKS // Ordinance 21-15

As we get into summer and closer to July 4th, the Joliet Police Department reminds the community fireworks are prohibited in the City of Joliet. Firework ordinance (Section 21-15) violation fines start at $500! Besides being subject to a fine, fireworks can cause serious, even life-threatening injuries. Please leave the fireworks to the professionals and attend a community planned event instead.

We also often hear the complaint from the public that we "never respond to firework calls". This is simply not true. In a city of ~150,000 people that covers ~65 square miles, other high-priority life-threatening calls take precedence over fireworks. We address firework complaint calls as Officer availability allows. In 2020 alone, we responded to 1,127 firework related calls. Another issue is that it can be difficult for our Officers to "catch" people setting off fireworks, as they need to witness the fireworks being set off for a citation to be issued.
