“Aren’t trusts just for wealthy people?”

We hear this one a lot, and we get why. The word “trust” sounds like yachts and family fortunes.

But most of the trusts we help set up are for regular families. A retired couple who wants their house to pass to the kids without dealing with probate. A mom who wants to make sure her son with special needs keeps his benefits after she’s gone. A widower who wants someone he trusts to step in if he can’t manage his own bills someday.

None of them would call themselves wealthy. They just love their people and want things to be easier for them.

Every so often, a note comes in that stops us in our tracks. This one, from a client, did exactly that:

Friend of the Firm Student Link
This month, we’re happy to introduce Nicole Zajdel and Student Link, a local nonprofit helping children with learning differences and their families understand special education and get the support they need.

For parents, making sense of an IEP, a 504 Plan, or an evaluation can be confusing.
Student Link helps families review these documents, prepare for school meetings, and understand their child’s educational rights.
They can also attend meetings alongside families and provide ongoing support.

Their approach focuses on collaboration: helping families and school teams work together, with the child’s needs at the heart of the conversation.

Through workshops, literacy initiatives, and community events, Student Link also helps families connect with resources beyond the classroom.

Coming Up: Storybook Spooktacular
Student Link is hosting a family-friendly literacy fundraiser this Saturday, October 17, from 4–7 PM at the ACRP Play Center in Johnstown.

Storybook Spooktacular brings together books, Halloween fun, and activities that celebrate reading and creativity. Proceeds will support Student Link’s advocacy, family support, and educational resources for local children and families.

Medicare Open Enrollment Begins October 15

Medicare Advantage and Part D plan details and ratings for 2027 are now available. Even if you are satisfied with your current coverage, this is a good time to review your plan because costs, benefits, and provider networks can change from year to year.

Before deciding, look beyond the premium and star rating. Consider:

• Are your prescriptions still covered?
• Is your preferred pharmacy still in the network?
• Do your doctors and healthcare providers participate?
• Have deductibles, copays, or other costs changed?
• Do the plan’s benefits still meet your needs?

Medicare Open Enrollment runs from **October 15 through December 7**.

Compare plans through Medicare Plan Finder at **Medicare.gov/plan-compare** or call **1-800-MEDICARE** for assistance.

A will lets you name who inherits your property, who cares for your minor children, and who carries out your wishes. What it doesn't do is avoid probate — your estate still goes through the court process, just with your instructions guiding it.
