Fulmont Family Mediation Service

Fulmont Family Mediation Service I may return to the practice of mediation in the future.

Originally established in 1989 by Ellen Ross and her late husband Ken Newman, Fulmont Family Mediation Service stands ready to help you resolve your family and divorce-related issues out of court by an amicable process of alternative dispute resolution. Fulmont Family Mediation Service is currently inactive due to the time demands of my position as an Assistant Public Defender in Montgomery County, NY, assigned to Family Court.

Fulmont Family Mediation Service is currently inactive, due to my acceptance of a part-time position with the Montgomery County Public Defender's office. While that position is part-time, it is keeping me far too busy to handle mediation matters at this time. I am leaving this page up in case I do return to a mediation practice at some time in the future.

Online mediation can be challenging for those who have difficulty with technology. In the new working environment created by the COVID-19 pandemic, which is causing long-term changes to the way that we do business, it is important to be willing to adapt, but it is also important to be patient with those who find it challenging to deal with these changes. In alternative dispute resolution, we don't choose to see the other participant in the process as an adversary, and we don't choose to take advantage of any perceived weakness that the other participant may have. Instead, we do our best to work together as a team, the mediator and the participants, to accomplish the best possible outcome for everyone.

Yesterday and Today

In 1989, my late husband Ken Newman and I moved to Johnstown, New York. Soon after we arrived, we started a new project together: Fulmont Family Mediation Service. Our goal was to provide family and divorce mediation to the community and to help people avoid the adversarial court system and settle their disputes in a civil and amicable way. Ken’s health deteriorated severely within a few years, and as a result of his chronic illness which lasted for decades, we did not fully develop Fulmont Family Mediation Service. Ken passed away in January 2020, and one of my goals for this crazy year of 2020 is to bring Fulmont Family Mediation Service back to full operation to fulfill the dream that Ken and I shared long ago: to resolve family disputes out of court whenever possible, and to spare families the damage that the adversarial litigation system can create. Ken did not have the opportunity to experience the many changes caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, which has fundamentally altered how people do business and communicate with one another, in ways which are likely to have long-term and even permanent effects. At Fulmont Family Mediation Service, I hope to work with you on embracing and adapting to these changes, while remembering, also, to be patient when these new modes of communication create a challenge for those who are not accustomed to remote work technology. Let’s walk forward into the future together.
