Our goal is to provide legal help to our clients so that they are able to secure the basic necessities of life and remain safe and secure in their homes. We strive to increase the public's awareness of their legal ri

NNJLS attorneys can assist for free with VA benefits issues, including denied or partially granted service-connected disability determinations, military pension benefits, and access to VA medical care. 
 
We also help with public benefits such as SSI/SSDI, TANF, GA, SNAP, and Medicaid/NJ FamilyCare, as well as housing concerns, debt collection, credit issues, bankruptcy, consumer fraud, wills and future planning documents, and employment barriers, including criminal record expungement and related matters.

She co-signed a car loan for her uncle, trusting it would be handled responsibly. When he failed to make payments, she was shocked to learn she was being sued.

Facing nearly $20,000 in alleged liability, she was overwhelmed and unsure of what to do next.

She turned to NNJLS for help.

After reviewing the loan transaction and the subsequent repossession and sale of the vehicle, NNJLS identified serious issues that failed to comply with applicable legal requirements. NNJLS raised these concerns with the creditor’s counsel and the case was withdrawn. 

The result brought immediate relief.

Our client could finally move forward without the weight of a nearly $20,000 claim.

She found herself in a stressful situation involving a restraining order filed against her by her spouse. She subsequently filed a restraining order against her spouse. Both sides had active court filings, and the situation had become tense and hard to manage due to allegations of physical conflict and prior incidents between them.

As the case moved through the court process, it was unclear how it would be resolved, or whether it would go to a full hearing.

She turned to NNJLS for help.

We worked with her through the court process, reviewed the filings, spoke with opposing counsel, and supported her as the case moved forward. Through advocacy and ongoing discussions, the matter was resolved with mutual dismissals of the restraining orders.

This allowed her and her spouse to step away from active court involvement and move forward with trying to reconcile their relationship.

She was doing everything she could to care for her adult son, but without legal authority, she couldn’t make the decisions he needed.

Her son has been developmentally disabled since childhood and depends on his family for support. As new challenges arose, she realized she needed guardianship to move forward.

She turned to NNJLS for help.

We guided her and her family through the guardianship process, helping them petition the court so they could act in his best interest. After presenting testimony about his condition and needs, the court granted full guardianship!

The impact was immediate.

With guardianship in place, they can now make critical decisions on his behalf and begin the next steps to secure his future.

What began as a response to a growing urgency, NNJLS brought together leaders across legal services, government, education, and grassroots organizations in Hudson County to its Community Coordination and Access to Justice Roundtable to confront one of the most critical issues facing our communities today.

Hosted on April 2nd at Saint Peter’s University, dozens of community stakeholders came together not just to talk, but to align. To build real pathways so no resident is left navigating fear and uncertainty alone.

Opening remarks from NNJLS Executive Director Leah Ashe, United States Congressman Rob Menendez, and New Jersey State Senator Angela V. McKnight set the tone for a focused, solutions-driven conversation.

At a time when access to justice is being challenged, this roundtable demonstrated what effective collaboration looks like: coordinated, informed, and committed to protecting both the integrity of our systems and the dignity of the communities we serve.

The result: clearer pathways for support, stronger coordination, and a more connected network ready to respond to evolving needs across Hudson County.

Grateful to every organization and leaders who made this convening possible and to those continuing the work every day.

Our team was proud to attend the NJRC 2026 Annual Reentry Conference held on April 2 at Saint Peter’s University!

Attorneys Emily Looney and Alisha Dalbeck, along with Family Unit paralegal Aileen Jimenez, joined advocates and professionals from across the state to engage in this year’s theme: “Trauma and Healing: Brain Science, Human Dignity, and Justice.”

The conference focused on the importance of trauma-informed care for individuals returning from incarceration. We are grateful for the opportunity to learn, connect, and continue strengthening our approach to supporting our clients and community.
