Received a CP321J notice from the IRS?
Here’s what it’s actually about.
The IRS is sending this informational notice to certain taxpayers to let them know about a new retirement savings incentive called the Saver’s Match, which begins in 2027.
So, what is the Saver’s Match?
Simply put, the federal government is encouraging eligible taxpayers to save for retirement by matching a portion of what they contribute to a qualifying retirement account.
Beginning in 2027, if you qualify and contribute to an eligible retirement plan or IRA, the government may match up to 50% of your contributions — up to a $1,000 match per person each year. The amount you qualify for will depend on factors including your income.
For example, if you contribute $2,000 and qualify for the full 50% match, $1,000 could be added to your retirement account.
So why did you receive a CP321J?
The IRS is sending these notices to taxpayers who either claimed the Saver’s Credit on their 2025 tax return or whose 2025 income falls within the potential eligibility range for the new Saver’s Match.
Most importantly: The CP321J is informational. It does not mean there is a problem with your tax return or that you owe the IRS. It’s letting you know about a retirement savings benefit you may be eligible for beginning in 2027.
