I’d like to say a few words in honor of the passing of Barbara Hollis. No matter when or why, the death of a mother is always a tragedy for the family who will never cease to mourn her absence. Ms. Hollis’ death will also leave a huge hole in the community that she served. She has been a sensible and steadfast civil servant on the Clark County council for decades. The Democratic Party must now name a new member to the council, but make no mistake, no one could ever replace Ms. Hollis.
Clark County Citizens, you readers and your neighbors, are the people who serve on and are served by all levels of government. The process of picking a person to fill this empty chair is your chance to observe American democracy at the most local level. If you are a registered Democrat, you can attend the upcoming Caucus, contact your precinct representatives, or nominate yourself to be considered for this role. I encourage all citizens to take a moment to think about what qualities are important in our local representatives and why it is important for you to share your values with the people representing you. I encourage our party leaders to be thoughtful, deliberate, and transparent as they conduct this process, and to take this opportunity to welcome Citizen activism and engagement.
On the national level, we have seen such a positive response from Citizens when we put women and people of color at the forefront as we select leaders for our future. The Harris candidacy has enlivened the electorate in a way that the Biden candidacy never could.
We cannot go back, no matter how much we’d like to keep Ms. Hollis doing her good work, so we must go forward together, with the next generation of leaders who will bring us into a brighter future. We must ensure that our representatives in government actually represent our community, in all its wondrous diversity. Citizens, join me in using your voice and your vote if you share these values: political parties and processes that are active, welcoming and transparent, and that promote women, minorities and young people as the leaders of our future.
