A few well-placed snow stakes can prevent a lot of winter frustration.

Before the ground freezes or snow covers the property, mark the edges of the driveway, parking and turnaround areas. Pay particular attention to culverts, retaining walls, drainage ditches, large rocks and other obstacles that may disappear beneath a fresh snowfall.

Keep markers away from utilities and private-system components, and make sure they will not interfere with vehicles or snow-removal equipment. If someone else plows the property, ask what markings are most helpful before installing them.

Mountain-property preparation is often about making winter conditions easier to understand before winter arrives.

As heating season begins, take a few minutes to check the carbon-monoxide alarms in your home.

Carbon monoxide can be produced by fuel-burning equipment such as furnaces, fireplaces, water heaters and generators. The Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends CO alarms on every level of the home and outside sleeping areas.

Test each alarm, check its replacement date and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for batteries and placement. Heating equipment, chimneys, flues and vents should also receive the appropriate professional maintenance.

Never ignore a sounding alarm. Move outside to fresh air and contact emergency services rather than trying to locate the source yourself.
