GREAT NEWS, YLS MEMBERS ... 🗣

The Ribault and Raines High School Future Lawyers & Leaders Program is back for another exciting year!

In a recent letter from United States District Judge Brian J. Davis, he highlighted the continued partnership between the YLS and D.W. Perkins Bar Association for providing this impactful mentoring program for local high school students.

The program connects students with attorney mentors throughout the school year and culminates in an end-of-year mock trial. Judge Davis noted that growing student participation has increased the need for volunteer mentors. Attorneys are asked to commit approximately four hours per month, either in person or virtually, to help guide and encourage students interested in the legal profession.

Volunteers consistently describe the experience as both meaningful and rewarding, often gaining as much from the program as the students they mentor.

If you're interested in making a difference in a student's future while helping develop the next generation of legal professionals, we encourage you to volunteer as a mentor at the link here: https://www.jaxbar.org/general/custom.asp?page=futurementors

We just wanted to say thanks to the Jacksonville Daily Record for the recent coverage they gave our Annual YLS Kickball League - and congratulate on their back-to-back championships!

ICYMI, we just concluded one of our most competitive and memorable kickball seasons to date, with the Ballbarians edging the Defenders in the championship game to claim their second consecutive league title and complete an undefeated season.

The Defenders capped off an outstanding season of their own, pushing the Ballbarians to the final half inning in a championship that served as a fitting conclusion to one of the league’s best seasons. Every team contributed to what many considered the league’s most competitive and entertaining season yet.

The victory marked the Ballbarians’ fifth championship in the league’s last seven seasons.

This year’s league featured five teams representing a broad cross section of Jacksonville’s legal community: the Ballbarians, the Defenders, Kickballerz, the State Attorney’s Office, and for the first time, Jacksonville University College of Law.

Each team brought its own personality, competitive spirit and camaraderie to the league, making every Thursday night’s slate of games a highlight of the summer for players and spectators alike.

The addition of Jacksonville University College of Law marked an milestone by bringing future lawyers into one of the most anticipated annual traditions and strengthening connections between law students and practicing attorneys.

With five competitive teams and one of the league’s most exciting seasons to date, the continued growth of the league reflects the strong sense of community within Jacksonville’s legal profession.

Each Thursday evening, attorneys, law students and legal professionals from private practice and government agencies traded the courtroom for the kickball field. This season also introduced walk-up songs, with participating teams embracing the tradition and adding even more energy and personality to game nights.

Combined with spirited competition, enthusiastic family members, friends and coworkers lining the sidelines, the atmosphere made each Thursday feel like a true community event!

And there ya have it -- our official LOOK BACK on our amazing 2026 YLS Pin Pals Bowling Tournament fundraiser for Special Olympics Florida - Northeast Region that went down a couple of weeks ago at the Batt Family Fun Center!

Check out these heart-warming photos from JBA photog Brandi Moore Media from this year's tournament, which the Jacksonville Bar Association and JBA YLS have been holding for decades!

Local law firms sponsored a bowling lane and were paired with Special Olympics athletes to compete for prizes and The Legacy Trophy, a symbol of unity and sportsmanship that is passed on to each year’s winning team.

Last year, the event raised more than $6,300 as proceeds directly support the local Northeast chapter of Special Olympics Florida, helping provide year-round sports training and competitive opportunities for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.

And we will reveal how much was raised VERY SOON when we hold a check presentation ceremony! So stay tuned!

Also, huge, giant, MASSIVE shoutout to all of our sponsors who helped make this event happen, including:

** Rogers Towers, P.A.
** Veritext
** Murphy & Anderson, P.A.
** Coker Law
** Gunster
** Smith Hulsey & Busey
** Brennan Manna & Diamond P.A.
** Equitable Advisors
** Akerman
** Pajcic & Pajcic
** Marks Gray, P.A.
** Klavon Mediation PLLC
** Holland & Knight
** Lippes Mathias LLP
** Carr Allison

And, of course, much appreciation to the Special Olympics athletes and their families who participated, formed friendships with our members and made it an event to remember. We can't wait to do it again next year!

Great work, JBA and YLS members!

"THE CHAMPS REIGN SUPREME ONCE AGAIN!"

Those are likely the words that were yelled one week ago during the championship match of the YLS Kickball League between "The Ballbarians" and "The Defenders" - as The Ballbarians, for the second year in a row, won the title! 🏆

Congrats to The Ballbarians! 💪 💪

The final was held at Alexandria Oaks Park in San Marco, and it was a TON of fun! Friends and family of both teams lined the field to cheer on their peeps, but ultimately it was The Ballbarians, captained by longtime Jacksonville Bar Association member John Weedon, who won it all against The Defenders, who were captained by fellow JBA member Owen Schmidt.

Finishing 3rd in the standings this year were Team Kickballerz, 4th place was SAO4 (State Attorney's Office, 4th Judicial Circuit of Florida) and holding down 5th was Team JU (Jacksonville University College of Law)!

Thanks to everyone who took part in another great season of this annual league that brings the Jacksonville legal community together weekly for some fun competition!

Already can't wait until next year!

♥️♣️♦️♠️UPDATE ON THE MONEY RAISED FROM OUR YLS CHARITY POKER TOURNAMENT:

It was more than we originally thought, anticipated or hoped for!

Check out this LinkedIn post from one of our Charity Poker Tournament Chair , who updated everyone recently that a GRAND TOTAL of $16,353 was raised that night for - a nonprofit dedicated to combating food insecurity for children.

We are especially proud to help this cause because of their important work in our community. Struck by the number of children in North Florida who live with hunger each day, Sherri Porter founded Hunger Fight in 2012. Headquartered in Jacksonville, FL, their story began with a small team of people producing and distributing shelf-stable, flavorful, nutritious meals to those at risk for hunger in our community. Hunger Fight developed two programs: "Food for Their Bellies" and "Books for Their Brains." These programs address two of the most important issues that impact the success of children in school: hunger and illiteracy.

The event, which is organized annually by the YLS board of governors, brought together attorneys, legal professionals and businesses for an evening of friendly competition in support of a meaningful cause.

Thank you again to everyone who either played in, donated to, or sponsored this event. We are so truly appreciative! ❤️ ⚖️
