Mediation is an alternative dispute resolution opportunity that allows the parties to decide together what will work for the new family unit going forward. Each family is unique and each side enters into litigation with their own stories, points of view, and histories. Dissolution is a painful process, but working together in mediation to resolve issues, rather than airing grievances in an open court, can set the stage for more peaceful co-parenting in the future. And coming together to resolve a case in mediation allows for finality with certainty so each party can move on and start the healing process.

On the divorce paperwork, you have to list a reason. There is no box to check next to viral poem or thrown cup of water or pinecone or billable hours or miscarriages or work travel or postcard or stowaway or depression or ultimatums or excised notebook papers or creative frustration or daycare drop-offs or silent treatment. Irreconcilable differences didn’t cover it-I could see a pages-long parenthetical after the term, a list of what had happened, a list of clues in a mystery I could not and will not solve. But the term would have to do.
