In 2024, Rep. Kevin Hern of Oklahoma formally read into the Congressional Record to recognize August 6th as National Paralegal Day. The date was chosen to specifically honor the 1968 founding of the Bar Association's Special committee on Lay Assistant's.

The recognition was a joint effort by the four major paralegal associations: NALA-The Paralegal Association, the American Association for Paralegal Education, NEFPA-the National Federation of Paralegal Associations, and the National Association for Legal Support Professionals.

Fun Fact: the code of ethics of NALA (where I hold my accreditation) is a mirror of the Bar Association's code of ethics. Most paralegals hold a degree specifically for their chosen profession, along with credentials from a paralegal association in which we are required to meet continuing education to maintain our certification. I often joke my 10.5 hours of testing to obtain my certificate was a mini-Bar exam.

So if you know a paralegal, wish them a Happy National Paralegal Day, I know they will appreciate the recognition for ALL their hard work, not only in their day to day job, but just to get to where they are today.
