Facebook reminded me of this today, which I had forgotten. This was when the City of Jackson, rightfully, decriminalized the possession of small amounts of ma*****na. Unfortunately, state and federal laws still apply, and continue to make this a crime, which is unfortunate. Thankfully, the people of Mississippi had the wisdom to amend the Mississippi Constitution to allow for medical ma*****na for certain serious illnesses, but the Mississippi Supreme Court yanked the rug out from under that referendum that had overwhelmingly passed (and simultaneously drew into question the legality of numerous other referenda unrelated to ma*****na). The Mississippi legislature is considering options on the issue, but there is little hope that anything meaningful will come out of that body. In the meantime, lives will continue to be ruined by criminal convictions for possession of small amounts of ma*****na, while alcohol continues to destroy and kill people with impunity, although ma*****na is proven to be less dangerous and in many cases has positive benefits. But the powers that be in Mississippi don't let the facts get in their way. Nearly 40 states have either medical ma*****na or have even legalized personal use apart from illness. If only Mississippi didn't have to be one of the lone holdouts on such an important issue.
