How much does it cost to get a utility patent?

The costs for a utility patent can be broken down into two categories: short-term costs and long-term costs.

Short-Term Costs pay for your utility patent application and to establish patent pendency of your invention, these costs can be anywhere from $5,000 to $10,000.

Long-Term Costs pay for the examination of your utility patent application. The merits of your invention will be reviewed and researched and a rejection or acceptance will be issued based upon this review. The costs for this process can range from $2,000 to $10,000.

Ultimately the amount you pay to get a utility patent will depend on the complexity of your invention, the business environment of the invention, the inventor’s goals and the experience of the patent attorney that you hire.

While preparing for NASA’s Galileo mission, Lonnie Johnson, conceptualized the idea for the super soaker while testing heat pump systems in his home bathroom. Johnson was working to create a heat pump that used water instead of freon when he hooked a nozzle to his bathroom sink and a stream of water shot across his bathroom. Johnson thought to himself, “this would make a great water gun.” Johnson went on to not only create the super soaker, but also the nerf gun and now holds over 120 patents.

While working at the Columbia Paper Bag Company, Margaret Knight recognized the daunting nature of hand folding brown paper bags.
